SKILL LIST FOR INLINE SKATERS

 

BASIC INLINE SKATING SKILLS: Level 1 Beginner

A. READY POSITION

1. Feet should be shoulder width apart.
2. Weight on your heels.
3. Knees bent forward over the toes of your skates.
4. Back straight - head not drifting forward.
5. Arms in front or on the side of the body - palms open.

B. SWIZZLE (Hour Glass)

1. Weight on heels.
2. Begin with heels together and toes pointing outward in a "V".
3. Allow feet to drift apart about 12 to 18 inches.
4. Point toes inward and draw feet inward until approximately 5 inches apart.
5. Repeat the process to maintain forward motion.

C. STRIDE ONE

1. From the Ready Position - lean sideways to balance point on support leg.
2. Push other leg directly to the side about 4 inches. (not to the back)
3. After the push return the pushing leg to the original position.
4. Now glide on two feet to stabilize.
5. Repeat on the other leg.

D. STRIDE TWO

1. Same as STRIDE ONE but feet are closer together.
2. Alternate left and right pushes. (without two foot glide)
3. Bring returning leg directly next to support leg under the body.

E. HEEL STOP

1. From ready position arms out in front and bend forward at waist.
2. Shift weight to left leg and roll right leg forward about 12 inches.
3. Tilt right toe up to engage heel brake and press down.

F. SNOW PLOW STOP

1. Swizzle feet apart to widest stance - weight on heels.
2. Push outward on heels as feet attempt to roll inward.

G. SKATING THE GRASS

1. Assume extended position with one leg forward and weight on back leg.
2. Roll onto short grass from paved surface to reduce speed.

H. "A" FRAME TURN

1. Swizzle feet apart to wide stance.
2. Apply pressure to heel of one skate to turn opposite direction.

I. PARALLEL TURN

1. Assume extended position with one foot forward.
2. Left foot in front = Left turn, Right foot in front = Right turn.
3. Lean in the direction of the turn.
4. The foot in front should be on a slight outside edge.
